Ceiling Electrical

The county inspector stopped by early so she had taken a look around before I arrived.  We have a few items to followup on, but passed the ceiling electrical inspection and are ready to move on to the next steps.  Little by little we are getting there.

Little boxes

Here is the solution to last week's puzzle to find the holes.  We installed the electrical boxes this weekend, salvaged the last of the redwood siding and continued to chop up tree trimmings to fit in our compost bin.

The daffodils are starting to bloom, the picture shows them from the kitchen windows.  Usually the deer eat them, guess they don't like the security light.

Bad board is fixed

There was one bad board on the ceiling.  We know wood isn't perfect, but one board was less perfect than others.  It has been replaced.

Our accomplishment today was recycling a collection of cardboard boxes.  Nails come in boxes, braces come in boxes, lots of packaging for lots of little parts.  At least a portion of the construction debris is being diverted away from the landfill.

Prep for Living Room Lighting

There are five holes in the ceiling.  I challenge you to find all five.  It doesn't look like a lot of work, but 4 inch holes are not the easiest things to drill.  We're all ready to install the lighting in our living room.  We're all ready to run the romex next weekend after the sprinklers are in and just before the insulation goes in.

The best part of the weekend was "playing house" to confirm where we wanted switches.  Walking in from the garage as if I've just gotten home from work, and picturing where I would expect the light switch to be.  Walking from the kitchen to the dining area as if I was calling people to dinner and wanting to switch on the light over the dining table.  At least one switch was not where our architect put it, but both Ian and I are convinced that we would expect the switch to be in the same place.

Building envelope

We did some little projects today around the house.  We went to a kickoff for a resilient community program to teach us how to reduce our carbon footprint and prepare for likely problems associated with climate change.  The talk stressed how important it was to seal the building envelope of your home.  We'll eventually get to the level of detail that they were addressing.  But for now we're working on the building envelope on a very basic level

Ridge Beam

Our ridge beam is up!  It's amazing seeing the ceiling starting to come together.

Garage door?

We took our garage door down today.  It can be very dangerous if you don't get the right tools and don't read the directions.  The one-size-fits-all tools didn't fit, but we made do and the garage door is safely down.  We joked that I love the plywood look on the front door so much, that I had to have it on the garage too.
We also finished sealing around our greywater pipe.

Happy New Year

We were here on new years day.  Lots of cleaning.  A day of hard work with not much to show except a demoed sewer pipe and emptier garage.  But today was great.  The crew was here and put up most of the joists for our kitchen ceiling.  Ian and I moved a water heater with some help from our carpenter.  We did a little painting near our water heater and prepped to seal around the hole where our greywater goes through the slab. And patching the floor where the sewer pipe was. Lots of progress.
